It’s gonna be leaner and meaner than the standard car
Volkswagen Australia has voiced its interest in a Golf GTI variant to sit atop the local line-up, in the lead-up to the reveal of the GTI TCR at Lake Worthersee on May 9.
“We would be keen on such a variant,” said Paul Pottinger, general manager for corporate communications at Volkswagen Australia, telling us “the [Golf] GTI and R line-ups are ever-evolving.”
In Australia, around one in four (25 per cent) Golf sales are either GTI or R models, meaning a quarter of Golf customers are spending between $40,000 and $60,000 on their German small car.
Volkswagen’s local division has already introduced several special-edition models to meet increasing demand, including the three-door entry-level GTI Original, the stripped-back Golf R Grid, along with the top-spec GTI Performance Edition 1 and Golf R Wolfsburg.
The Golf GTI TCR, meanwhile, essentially brings the hotter Golf R’s high-output engine tune to a front-wheel drivetrain.
With 213kW of power and 370Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre turbo four, the GTI TCR is far more competitive on paper against the likes of the Hyundai i30 N, Renault Megane RS and Honda Civic Type R.
Drive continues to be sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic – likely the same wet-clutch unit seen in the GTI Performance and R – along with a model-specific mechanical locking front differential.
A 0-100km/h time hasn’t been quoted yet, but Volkswagen claims the GTI TCR will hit 264km/h with its limiter removed – otherwise it’ll spin to 250km/h out of the factory.
