That’s fast, and the pricetag is pretty impressive too…
Project Gold, an in-house restored Porsche 911 993 Turbo, made waves when it was launched in August, blending the sort of attention-to-detail we’ve come to expect from Singer with a proper factory budget.
Turns out, Porsche’s approach was a winner. The hotted-up 993 Turbo this weekend sold for US$3.08 million ($4.3 million) at auction, after a 10-minute, 37-bid battle between buyers.
All the profits will be donated to the Ferry Porsche Foundation, which supports a range of initiatives in education, research and culture around its factories in Stuttgart and Leipzig.
Designed to celebrate 70 years of Porsche, the Project Gold 993 Turbo wraps a 3.6-litre turbocharged flat-six engine in a deep, shimmering gold body. The engine has actually been rebuilt, bolt-by-bolt, by Porsche Classic, and pumps out the same 335kW as the original.
It’s put to all four wheels through a transmission and all-wheel drive lifted from the Porsche Classic catalogue. The engine is air-cooled, of course, breathing through a beautiful whale-tail spoiler.
There are plenty of bespoke touches scattered around the body, starting with a subtle gold pinstripe around the hollow-spoke alloy wheels. They’re actually painted gold underneath that black finish, and a laser is used to remove a layer of paint to create the subtle stripe.
Porsche has seen fit to finish the body using the same cathodic dip process as its modern cars, designed to create a more consistent paint job than was possible when the car was first built. Attention to detail is critical on cars like this, after all.
The same black-and-gold motif has transitioned to the interior, where the seats, dash and steering wheel are all trimmed in contrasting materials.
It all looks period correct, from the five-dial instrument binnacle to the classic radio – although we’d suggest Porsche has gone the extra mile and wheeled out its fanciest leather, stitching and materials.
The colour scheme and design are actually in keeping with the Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Design, developed by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and priced from $461,900 before on-road costs. Just 500 were built, making it very rare in the context of most Porsche 911s, but positively common alongside the 993 Project Gold.
