Track-focused flagship tackles iconic German circuit
The upcoming Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 has been spied again, this time during performance testing at the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife.
Set to become the flagship hardtop 718, the Cayman GT4 will build on the concept of the previous version – aggressive race-inspired aerodynamics, a track-focused mechanical package, along with a high-revving naturally-aspirated boxer engine.
It’s believed power will come from a detuned version of the 4.0-litre flat six offered in the larger 911 GT3 – which currently develops 368kW of power and 460Nm of torque.
Drive should be sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic.
The previous generation had a 283kW/420Nm 3.8-litre engine, and was capable of reeling off the 0-100km/h standard in 4.4 seconds. Expect the new car to edge closer to 4.0 seconds flat, perhaps hit the high threes.
Key visual differences between the GT4 and say, a GTS, include the large fixed rear wing, more aggressive body kit and intakes, along with larger wheels, tyres and brakes. Trainspotters will also notice the tailpipes are wider-set compared to the centrally-mounted units on current versions.
The 718 Cayman GT4 will be pitched as a more hardcore alternative to the 718 Boxster Spyder, which should get the same naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine and most of the same uprated mechanicals, coupled with a sleeker look without the aggressive body kit and fixed wing.
It’s unknown at this stage when the new flagship models will be revealed, though the lack of camouflage on this prototype suggests we shouldn’t have to wait much longer to see the final market versions.
Our guess is that both the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Boxster Spyder will be revealed before the end of the year, potentially at the Paris motor show in October.
