Geely has unveiled the Concept Icon, its take on the Volvo XC40, at the 2018 Beijing motor show.
According to its designers, the Concept Icon has been built around two key words: high tech and inspiring. It was penned at Geely’s studio in Shanghai, and is unashamedly aimed at young buyers.
With that in mind, the design team hasn’t used the term ‘icon’ to mean something venerable, instead considering it “where an application starts on a digital journey”. In other words, the car has been designed to look like an app’s icon on your home screen. Seriously.
That’s why the nose is blocky and flat, with 8-bit inspired design elements scattered throughout. There are also infinity loops scattered around, with square-edged details on the grille, sides and glass panoramic roof.
Behind the wheel, the design team has focused on keeping things pared back. The centre console is designed to fade into the background, placing focus on the central infotainment system. There are screens for rear-seat passengers, too.
“A simplified interior also provided us with greater amounts of storage space, which proves to be useful as users today carry multiple devices on a daily basis,” said Guy Burgoyne, design centre chief for Geely.
At the moment, this is just a concept. But given the XC40 and Lynk & Co 01 are both production vehicles, Geely has a suitable platform to take the Icon from flat-faced concept to reality.
