All-electric SUV is coming, but we’ve still got a little while to wait
Ladies and gentlemen, stop holding your breath: we finally have an official launch date for the first mass-production Audi electric vehicle.
Mark down August 30 in your diary, that’s when the covers will finally come off the e-tron. It’s been teased extensively, and a heavily camouflaged prototype was revealed in Geneva, but the end of August will be the first proper look at the car in production guise.
It’ll also be our first chance to peek the interior, which is likely to adopt the touchscreen-heavy design focus of the most recent A8 and A6.
We do know some things about the car, though. For one, the prototype offers more than 500km of driving on a full charge, and runs to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds on the way to a 210km/h top speed.
With 320kW and 800Nm on tap from its dual-motor setup, those figures are on a par with the Jaguar I-Pace – the most natural rival to the e-tron until the Mercedes-Benz EQC and BMW iX3 arrive.
When the battery goes flat, the e-tron will support 150kW charging for 80 per cent of range in just 30 minutes.
After the ‘conventional’ e-tron is released, we’ll see a coupe-like Sportback version and a hot Audi Sport electric car in the brand’s stable. You can also expect a ‘premium compact’ electric vehicle in 2020.
Audi wants to sell 800,000 electrified vehicles in 2025, and has announced plans to make its production facilities carbon-neutral by 2030 – the Belgian factory where the e-tron will be built already is.
