Four-cylinder diesel available now overseas, unconfirmed for Australia
Audi UK has added a new 40TDI engine variant to the A6 and A7 model lines, offering a new four-cylinder entry point to its large sedan, wagon and liftback.
Deliveries for the new models are set to commence in September for the A6 and November for the A7, all powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel making 204PS – or 150kW in our money – solely available with front-wheel drive at launch. A quattro all-wheel drive version will be offered later this year, while all versions are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Like six-cylinder versions of the A6 and A7, the 40TDI utilises 48V mild-hybrid technology that can recover up to 5kW of energy during braking and engage a coasting function between 34 and 99mph (55-159km/h) which leaves the engine at idling speed to save fuel.
The A6 40TDI completes the 0-100 sprint in 8.1 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 152mph (244km/h). Meanwhile, the A6 Avant and A7 Sportback take 8.3 seconds to hit triple figures with the 40TDI powertrain, and claim top speeds of 149mph (240km/h) and 152mph (244km/h) respectively.
Standard features across all A6 and A7 models in the UK include autonomous emergency braking, rear-view camera with all-round parking sensors, lane-departure warning, dual touchscreens, LED head- and tail-lights, along with 18-inch (A6) or 19-inch (A7) alloy wheels.
The Audi A6 40TDI sedan kicks off at £38,640 ($67,645), while the A6 Avant 40TDI is priced from £40,470 ($70,849). The A7 40TDI starts at £47,140 ($82,526).
We’ve contacted Audi’s local division regarding Australian availability of the 40TDI engine in the A6 and A7 line-ups, and are awaiting a response.
Earlier this month pricing and specification details for the A7 Sportback (above) were released for Australia, with the six-cylinder 50TDI quattro set to be priced from $131,900 when it lands in November.
Stay tuned for an update.
