The 2020 Volkswagen Touareg will have waited for the closing of the Geneva trade fair 2018 to reveal itself in the big day. This third generation focuses on technology equipment and life on board. Discovery of this new Touareg 3 before its launch in the summer in Europe.
Design, Based on MLB Platform
The Volkswagen Touareg was the first SUV launched by the German brand in 2002. Two generations later and nearly a million models produced, the Touareg is renewed in the spring of 2018. This new model is based on the same technical base as the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne (MLB platform). Its template has evolved well, with an upward length of 8 cm (4.88 m) and an increased width of nearly 5 cm (1.98 m).
The Touareg 3 is, therefore, more imposing, but it is also lighter by 106 kg compared to the previous model thanks to its body made of aluminum (48%) and the use of lighter steels.
In terms of style, the 2020 Volkswagen Touareg does not revolutionize the segment. There are some style elements of the T-Prime GTE concept: Large grille, tapered optics, ribbed bonnet, marked rear fenders.
2020 Volkswagen Touareg Interior
The real revolution is on board the Touareg. What’s his name? Innovision Cockpit. Like a Mercedes E-class, the new Touareg has two screens that seem to form one. The one on the left, with a size of 12.3 inches, replaces the classical needle instrumentation. The one on the right displays a dimension of 15 inches. and allows you to control all the features of the car, from GPS navigation to music through air conditioning and driving aids.
This “Discover Premium” multimedia system even integrates a SIM card for the use of online services. The features are very numerous, but the ergonomics are good thanks to the shortcuts and, like a smartphone, the menus can be personalized.
The Touareg has thus become “high tech” and this is confirmed by discovering the numerous equipment available: “Matrix LED” headlights, “Nightvision” Night vision system, high head display, Dynaudio 14 HP audio system developing 730 W. It also has numerous driving aids (emergency braking, semi-autonomous driving in traffic jams, supervision of the driver’s vigilance) and comfort (active roll control, steered damping).
By entering the new Touareg, it is impossible to miss the 15-inch touchscreen. It is so large that the aerators are relegated to the bottom of the central console. This screen fits well with the dashboard. A board whose quality is appreciated with pleasing plastics and wooden inserts. On the other hand, plastics are less flattering in the transmission tunnel and doors. Hopefully, these little details will be corrected on the final models.
As for the habitability, it is very generous to the rear seats thanks to the sliding bench. The latter is comfortable, and the backrest can even tilt a few degrees for long trips. Volkswagen has treated the details with heated seats (massaging in front), numerous USB ports and power sockets.
Finally, the chest is generous with a load volume up to the previous model: 810 liters, + 113 liters.
V6 and V8, waiting for the hybrid
The new 2020 VW Touareg will be launched in Europe in the early summer, with a 3.0 V6 TDI diesel of 231 hp or 286 hp, combined with the full transmission 4Motion.
In the fall of 2018, the range will widen with the arrival of a 3.0 V6 petrol of 340 hp and a V8 TDI diesel of 421 HP. Finally, a rechargeable hybrid Touareg is also on the program. But its launch date has not yet been announced.
On the dynamic level, the road behavior of the 2020 Volkswagen Touareg is expected to increase compared to the previous model. It is lighter and offers a four-wheeled system like on the Cayenne, aiming to improve the maneuverability in town and agility on the road.
Pending the revelation of the prices of the new Touareg (expected for April), we already know the range of the French market. It is phased around five finishes: Touareg, carat, exclusive carat, R-line and exclusive R-line.
The entire digital instrumentation will be optional, while the multimedia system screen rests on a 9.2-inch slab on the base versions.
