Facelifted sedan and wagon expected to get more tech and potentially offer V6-powered performance halo.
The updated Volkswagen Passat has been spied during development testing this week, giving us a closer look at the facelifted sedan version of the brand’s mid-sizer.
Despite the camouflage at both ends, we can see the Passat will get a refreshed facial treatment headlined by a redesigned front bumper, a revised grille treatment, and what appears to be a new LED daytime-running light signature peeking through the wrap.
At the rear, meanwhile, there’s a new LED signature for the tail-lights as well, along with a revised bumper treatment.
It’s anticipated the biggest changes for the facelifted Passat will come in the form of new infotainment and driver technologies, namely an updated infotainment system and the suite of driver aids that debuted in the Arteon – such as emergency assist that slows the vehicle to a stop and merges into the emergency lane if the driver becomes unresponsive.
We’re not sure if the massive 15-inch infotainment display from the all-new Touareg will feature as an option, though the Passat and Arteon’s flagship status within the Volkswagen passenger car line-up indicates it’s a strong possibility.
In addition to the technology upgrades, the Passat is expected to offer new and revised powertrains, including a rumoured turbocharged V6 petrol that will serve as the new range-topping ‘R’ variant.
The plug-in hybrid Passat GTE will also likely offer improved range and fuel economy as part of the update, though specific details will have to wait until the new model’s launch.
In terms of timing, the new Passat is believed to be scheduled for reveal either late this year or early next year. An Australian launch will likely follow 6-12 months afterwards – though don’t expect any hybrid versions as the local arm has already expressed it will focus on the I.D. electric family.
