New sedan will make its global debut at Guangzhou show in China
The Toyota Corolla sedan will be unveiled at the Guangzhou motor show, which kicks off on November 16, China time.
As part of the announcement, the company has issued its first teaser of the new model. The traced outline of the sedan doesn’t reveal anything new, except for the upward kick of the window line as it approaches the C-pillar.
So far the company has put the 12th generation Corolla hatch on sale throughout most of the world. It has also revealed the new Corolla wagon, which will go on sale in Europe from 2019.
The new sedan should be the last major Corolla model to join the range, and will likely prove to be popular in markets which favour booted models over hatches, such as Asia, China and the Americas.
All versions will ride on the TNGA architecture, which is not only more rigid and lighter, but has earned praise for being significantly more enjoyable to drive.
As with the current car, the new Corolla sedan will be sold in two flavours in China because Toyota has two local production partners. FAW Toyota markets a model badged as the Corolla, while GAC Toyota sells a version called the Levin.
Although essentially the same car under the skin, the two Corolla variants have different headlight, grille, bumper, and tail-light treatments.
It’s not known if Toyota will continue the practice of tailoring the look of the Corolla sedan for different world markets. At present the version sold in Asia, Europe and Asia has plenty of chrome for a more upmarket look, while the American variant has sportier styling.
As with the already unveiled 12th generation hatch and wagon, we expect the sedan to be offered with petrol and petrol-electric hybrid drivetrains.
