New SUV could be headed Down Under
Citroen has revealed the European-market C5 Aircross, following the SUV’s global debut at last year’s Shanghai motor show.
Serving as the French brand’s new flagship model, the C5 Aircross is based on the PSA Group’s EMP2 modular architecture, which currently serves as the basis of models like the C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso, along with the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, amongst others.
It measures 4.50 metres long, and has a rather high ground clearance at 230mm.
Key specification highlights include the boot capacity – which is rated at 580L to 720L depending on the rear seat configuration – in addition to its Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension system and Advanced Comfort Seats.
Citroen says the C5 Aircross is equipped with up to 20 driver assistance systems, including Level 2 autonomous driving ability. One of these features is Highway Driver Assist – which likely combines adaptive cruise control and lane assist systems to allow for semi-autonomous highway driving.
There’s also a 12.3-inch TFT digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch central touchscreen in the cabin, much like the related Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs, along with new tech like wireless smartphone charging and the ConnectedCam system that debuted on the smaller C3.
Like the 5008, the C5 Aircross also features three individual rear seats, which slide, recline and fold independently.
In terms of personalisation, Citroen says the C5 Aircross is available with some 30 exterior combinations – including seven body colours, the option of a contrasting black roof, and three different colour packs. There’s also five different interior “ambiences”.
For Europe, the C5 Aircross will be available with a selection of petrol and diesel engines, ranging from 130bhp (97kW) to 180bhp (134kW). The company’s new eight-speed automatic transmission will also be offered.
Sometime late in 2019, the C5 Aircross will also become the first Citroen to be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The new SUV goes on sale in Europe at “the end of 2018”, with production to take place at the company’s Rennes-La Janais plant in France.
Speaking with CarAdvice, Citroen’s local public relations manager, Tyson Bowen, couldn’t confirm the C5 Aircross for our market, however said it is under consideration.
