2019 BMW 8 Series to debut at Le Mans

Mid-June launch confirmed for range-topping coupe

After concept cars and spy photos too numerous to mention, the new BMW 8 Series coupe will make its official debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Overnight BMW confirmed the 8 Series will make its official debut on June 15, European time, the day before the 2018 race.

Initially, the 8 Series will be spearheaded by the M850i xDrive coupe. This model is said to feature a “new” V8 engine, all-wheel drive with controlled rear-axle differential lock, active steering, 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, and active roll stabilisation.

Last month BMW announced the M850i would have 390kW of power and 750Nm of torque at its disposal, with drive sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

“The race is a pure demonstration of passion, dynamics and long-distance capability. These characteristics define our new sports car in a special way,” Klaus Fröhlich, head of development for BMW, said in a prepared statement.

Despite its sporting pretensions, BMW claims the new model is “equally as convincing in the role of the sovereign cruiser that pampers its passengers”.
